2017 Holiday Cheer Drive Details
WHAT IS THE HOLIDAY CHEER DRIVE?
During the holiday season, we aim to SPUR Holiday Cheer by providing essentials and other meaningful gifts to children in Lynn, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott, as well as provide basic necessities to adults experiencing homeless. For the 2017 holiday season, with your help, we anticipate bringing joy to over 400 children and approximately 30 adults.
WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:
Visit our office, 6 Anderson Street in Marblehead weekdays between 9a - 2p to pickup a wish list and pillow case or visit any of our 2017 community partners (view here).
Financially support our drive by making a tax-deductible gift here. Your monetary gift will help ensure expenses associated with our Holiday Cheer drive are covered, such as printing wish lists, procuring needed but unsponsored items, purchasing wrapping paper, drive infrastructure, etc.
HOW ARE RECIPIENTS SELECTED?
Recipients are identified by their case worker, school adjustment counselor or social service advocate as these professionals work closely with the individuals and know their personal circumstances. Effort is made to select recipients who are not receiving gifts from other groups and organizations, helping to distribute the generosity of the season.
WHAT GOES IN THE BUNDLE OF CHEER?
Working with each individual child or adult experiencing homelessness, the case workers and counselors submit a wish list that includes something the recipient wants, something the recipient needs, something to wear and something to read. This wish list is merely a guide so Sponsors have an opportunity to connect personally and get a sense of the child or adult. This insight allows Sponsors to shop with ease and find assurance the items selected will not only be appreciated but bring great joy. We encourage Sponsors to also include a toothbrush, toothpaste and healthy snack (such as peanut free granola bars).
CAN I JUST FILL MY PILLOW CASE AS I SEE FIT?
Our goal is to, with your help, make each recipient feel special, but none more so than the other. In all cases, multiple children from the same program or school receive bundles of cheer, and in some instances, siblings. As such, we encourage Sponsors to use the provided wish list as a guide to ensure similar value among bundles.
DO ITEMS NEED TO BE NEW?
Receiving something new is special for many. As such, we do request only new items be included.
WHAT IS THE TARGET VALUE?
As a guide, we suggest the target value of bundles to be around $75-100.
CAN I WRAP ITEMS IN MY BUNDLE OF CHEER?
We ask that all items are unwrapped. At check-in, we wrap, at a minimum, one item per bundle of cheer. Visit our webpage to volunteer for wrapping opportunities if this speaks to you.
WHAT HAPPENS AT CHECK-IN?
Between December 1 - 8, Sponsors drop off their bundles of cheer to area Community Partners. Over this time, a team of volunteers carefully opens, and checks bundles to ensure items inside are new, age appropriate and in line with the recipient's wish list. A minimum of one item is wrapped per bundle of cheer. If not included, and if our supply allows, hygiene products are added, as well as items which may have been left out of the bundle but needed (such as winter essentials).
I WOULD LIKE TO HELP BUT CAN’T COMMIT TO SPONSORING AN ENTIRE WISH LIST. CAN I STILL HELP?
Absolutely! We understand the holidays are a time of great giving and your involvement with our Holiday Cheer Drive on any level will be deeply impactful. If you cannot commit to sponsoring an entire wish list, consider partnering with another family; making a contribution toward a supporting our drive; or donating new items we can draw from to fill partial or unsponsored wish lists.
IS MY GIFT TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?
Yes. By January 31, Sponsors will receive a tax-deductible letter detailing their annual giving through SPUR. Non-monetary gifts such as bundles of cheer will be listed as such. Retain you receipts for your tax professional.
WHAT EXTRA ITEMS CAN I CONTRIBUTE?
A bag tagged “extra” will help fill gaps. Helpful items are hygiene, healthy snacks, as well as gift cards to Target, Walmart, Market Basket and AMC.
